Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 New Release

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is Infinity Ward’s sequel to 2019’s Call of Duty – Modern Warfare and it’s coming later this year.

A new Call of Duty game releasing towards the end of the year is nothing new to fans of the series. Call of Duty has had a fairly regular and reliable annual release schedule for many years, and the official announcement only confirmed what everyone suspected. Whether 2023 will be quite as predictable, though, is unclear, with reports that the series could take a year out.

Fortunately, we still have 2022’s entry to get excited about. Activision Blizzard claims that Modern Warfare 2 is going to be “the most advanced experience in franchise history” and that the upcoming Warzone 2 is being built “from the ground up” alongside it.

As the game’s October release date draws closer, we’ve started to learn a little more about it, with some revealing previews and some tantalizing peeks at campaign gameplay. We hope to get a bit more information on the game’s multiplayer in the coming months.

Modern Warfare 2 will release on October 28 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC via Battle.net and Steam.

Activision unveiled the release date in a rather bizarre reveal video that followed a container ship decorated with a mural of the series protagonist Ghost. You can watch the tantalizing, if relatively insubstantial, teaser below.

The new Call of Duty’s release on PlayStation will come as a relief to many, following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision – but it looks like the series will stay multi-platform for the foreseeable future (more on this below).

If you’re looking to try out Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 before launch, we’ve got excellent news. As revealed during the Call Of Duty League event on August 7, Activision confirmed there’d be a Modern Warfare 2 open beta, taking place across two separate weekends. Better still, we know exactly when it’ll take place.

Unfortunately, the Modern Warfare 2 beta dates are disappointing for Xbox players. Despite Microsoft’s intentions to acquire Activision Blizzard, PlayStation users will be the first to jump in, getting a whole weekend of beta exclusivity before a second-weekend test takes place across all platforms. If you pre-order Modern Warfare 2, you’ll receive early access two days before this goes live for all players.

With that in mind, these are the timings you need to be aware of:

  • Weekend one
    • Platforms — PS5, PS5
    • Early Access dates — September 16-17
    • Open beta dates — September 18-20
  • Weekend Two
    • Platforms — Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PC
    • Early Access dates — September 22-23
    • Open beta dates (includes PS4, and PS5) — September 24-26

If you’re unsure about pre-ordering Modern Warfare 2 just yet, fear not. We’ll be getting more information during Call of Duty: Next(opens in new tab), an upcoming presentation on September 16, 2022.

Right now, Activision admittedly hasn’t revealed much about what to expect, other than how it’ll feature the recently announced Marina Bay Grand Prix map. What we do have is this brief statement on the official website(opens in a new tab):

“The Modern Warfare II Beta is set to feature a robust multiplayer experience going beyond the Core 6v6 experience with a variety of meticulously designed maps of various sizes, and an equally impressive set of Modes, Progression experiences, and other aspects that will be more thoroughly revealed at Call of Duty.
